๐ Lilypad Project Report: June 19, 2023
Working on integrating with IPC, planning Bacalhau CLI integration, HackFS Submissions are in, Developer Docs & new networks integrations!
๐ Overview
The main engineering focus last week was continuing work on IPC integration, as well as designing the first major change to MODICUM to enable you to launch jobs on it directly from the existing Bacalhau CLI.
We've accelerated our plans to get to testnet by mid-July!!
And we launched docs for the existing Lilypad v0 - see below! The plan is to enable users to continue use the same interfaces to trigger Bacalhau jobs via smart contract with the Lilypad v1 network, so we should be able to smoothly transition the community of builders on Bacalhau + Lilypad v0 (of which HackFS has brought many!) to the new Lilypad v1 network.
๐บ๏ธ Roadmap Released!
We're working to deploy a Modicum-based minimal Lilypad Testnet (Lilypad v1) over the next month. We will use trusted mediators in this network, but later decentralise this aspect moving into the launch of the next milestone - Lilypad Testnet v2.
โ๏ธ Lilypad Engineering Update
๐ IPC debugging
Integrating the MODICUM prototype with Interplanetary Consensus took up most of our engineering effort last week. We've had to put in quite a lot of workarounds in the code, mostly around retrying things on spurious errors, but are still blocked on a basic issue where we deploy a contract and then can't call a function on it. We're currently working on a minimal reproducer, which will help the IPC team narrow it down more quickly.
๐ Filecoin data prep use case
We also made a decision - the first target use case for Lilypad v1 will be Filecoin data prep. Basically, onboarding large datasets onto Filecoin right now is slowed down by the client needing to do a lot of compute work to convert a set of input data files into car files and metadata needed for a deal engine to submit them to the network. Lilypad v1 will support crunching this data, assuming an S3-compatible storage interface, exposing an HTTP interface, all with re-runnable, hashable input data, deterministic compute and a built-in anti-cheating mechanism based on verification via replication. So users will be able to pay in FIL to do the compute-intensive step of preparing their data for Filecoin!
๐ Lilypad Research Update
Continuing our work on autonomous agents, we are integrating out thoughts with traditional ideas in game theory and economics, as well as newer ideas that have emerged in recent years in the field of artificial intelligence. The combination of these ideas should result in a robust protocol that can not only handle anti-cheating and pricing mechanisms, but a host of other thorny issues in trustless and permissionless distributed computing as well.
On the topic of actually implementing these protocols, we are currently building on top of MODiCuM, a protocol for a distributed computing marketplace. Our current plan is to iterate on this protocol, for example, by replacing their Mediator (which is effectively a trusted third party), with a group of nodes, giving the protocol a BFT-ness that it didn't have before. This should bring us to a testnet as soon as possible.
๐ Lilypad "All The Things" Update
This week, the Lilypad v0 docs were released in line with a deployment of the Lilypad bridge to multiple other networks in the ecosystem including Mantle, Polygon and Sepolia testnet - adding to the current deployment on the Filecoin Calibration Testnet and Filecoin mainnet.
The 3-week HackFS hackathon also finishes this week, with judging commencing on Wednesday for the $10,000 bounty of the top uses of Bacalhau and/or Lilypad.
๐ Lilypad now has docs!
Check out the docs - focussed currently on Lilypad v0. Lilypad v0 is a proof of concept that allows users to call Bacalhau jobs (on Docker or WASM) directly from their smart contracts! It was built to provide an initial solution to accessing off-chain verifiable compute via Bacalhau for web3 users and is the foundation for the Waterlily.ai Generative-AI Attribution app.

๐ HackFS Judging!
It has been inspiring to see an influx of ideas and innovations in both the Slack channel and looking through the dashboard of milestone submissions.
Some of our early checkins include projects building AI & ML DataDAOs and leveraging Bacalhau/Lilypad for training or analysis, including De- datacollabria and DatAgentDAO:
There's also projects building defi models and connecting to IPFS & databases like Tableland.
Stay tuned for the winner's update next week!
